The Thousandth Night
Tragic-comic story for 1 man and 25 characters.
1943. A small station lost in the middle of the French countryside. A train bound for Germany has been sabotaged, so the French gendarmes guard the prisoners until a new train arrives, while the SS head off to track down the saboteurs.
Accused of spreading subversive ideas, Guy Bellamy, an actor with the “Lampe magique” company, is convinced that it’s all a misunderstanding and that he has no business being on this convoy.
He, a modest histrion, is going to perform in front of his guards to prove that his show is not subversive, that he is not a threat to the Third Reich, and that he should be released.
His company having been decimated – some by deportation, others by joining the resistance or tempted by collaboration – he finds himself alone, having to interpret all the roles, from Shahrazade to Ali-Baba to the Genie of the Lamp, who is supposed to grant three wishes.
Will his wish to be freed be granted?
